Lymphedema and Whole Body Conditioning

Lymphedema is a swelling of the legs or arms caused by a congestion of the lymphatic system. Vein and breast cancer surgery are the two most common causes, but the condition can be caused by congestion of the lymph system from infection, heart failure, and obesity.

The treatment for lymphedema is called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) and is conducted at the PREVITY Clinic Center for Physical Healing.

CDT has four components:
1. Skin care
2. Compression
3. Exercise
4. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

All four components must be included for a good outcome. There are two phases:
I. Intensive: Reduce swelling
II. Maintenance. Stockings are issued. Maintain the reduction.
